We began in October, just before our Liveaboard Boater Day, on October 7th, and have enjoyed getting together, cleaning on land and on the river, as often as we can, on the odd weekends. GPSA has even adopted a street in DC through Mayor Bowser’s Adopt A Block program
Updated – March, 2022. To date, we have cleaned four times on the river and three on land since we began in October – collecting on land 25+13 trash grocery-sized bags with 11-14 GP residents participating each time, and from the river, 6 large-sized garbage bags of trash in total, with about 10 live-aboard residents participating each time.
Want to join us? We’ll send out announcements the Gangplank Google Group usually a week in advance when we notice the visible trash begins piling up. We send out another reminder email the morning of the Clean-up. Come on out and join us!
We welcome anyone who wants to join in!
Details – DC “Adopt A Block” groups agree to:
- Adopt a minimum of two blocks in a residential area.
- We clean from Eleanor Holmes Norton Park, up N Street SW to 4th Street SW, along one side of 4th Street to Main Ave, and then begin cleaning both sides of the street of Main Ave, turn left at 6th Street SW and clean both sides of the street through to our MSC parking lot.
- One block includes both sides of a street.
- We clean on both sides on Main Avenue and in the median.
- Host 4 cleanup days a year (though we encourage more frequent pickup)
- We have two under our belt.
- Report and request available city services to 311.
- Record clean-up results online
- Thanks to Joy Gaddy, we’ve been reporting our results.
- Maintain the agreement for two years.
- Help us keep the momentum! Come on out to our next water clean up from the docks or on land (weather permitting)
Thank you to everyone who has helped so far!
